‘Helping Nigerian Smallholder Farmers to Prosper’

The Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions (FSSS) is a new non-profit organisation, committed to empowering Nigeria’s smallholder farmers. Transitioning from Syngenta Foundation Nigeria, FSSS is locally governed and staffed, dedicated to driving agricultural innovation and sustainable development. With a mission to build resilient farming communities and ensure food security, FSSS is poised to become a crucial player in the transformation of Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.

“Our goal is to help smallholder farmers thrive,” said Isaiah Gabriel, the Director of FSSS. “We are building on the impactful legacy of the Syngenta Foundation, continuing the innovative programs that have already begun to create lasting change. Our focus is on ensuring farmers have access to the tools, technologies, and training they need to increase productivity and improve their livelihoods.”

FSSS’s core programs aim to uplift smallholder farmers by promoting agricultural innovation, offering capacity-building opportunities, and facilitating market access. The foundation’s Farmers’ Hubs—one-stop service platforms run by local agri-entrepreneurs—are designed to provide farmers, especially women and youth, with essential inputs, mechanisation, and agronomic support. “The Farmers’ Hubs are critical to addressing the challenges of rural smallholders who need access to quality inputs and markets in underserved areas,” Gabriel added.

Another key initiative is the Seed Hubs program, which distributes high-quality, locally adapted seeds to boost crop yields. “Access to the right seeds can make a significant difference in farmers’ productivity and income,” noted Timothy Azakere, FSSS’s Country Team Lead. “Our goal is to ensure that every smallholder farmer has what they need to succeed.”

Financial inclusion is also a priority for FSSS, as the organisation collaborates with financial institutions to offer tailored financial products, including agri-finance and insurance solutions. “Empowering farmers financially is key to ensuring they can invest in their farms and mitigate risks,” Ruth Elot, FSSS’s Country Finance and Admin Manager stated.

With a strong focus on market linkages, FSSS helps farmers secure better market opportunities by connecting them with buyers and processors. This ensures fair prices and stable incomes for smallholders, addressing the economic challenges many face.

Operating in 10 Nigerian states, including Jigawa, Kano, Benue, and Oyo, FSSS plans to expand its operations and build new partnerships. “We are excited to collaborate with stakeholders across the agricultural value chain—government agencies, international organisations, and the private sector,” said Azakere. “By working together, we can build a stronger, more resilient agricultural sector.”

As the foundation grows, it aims to continue innovating and advocating for policies that support Nigeria’s smallholders. “Our vision is a Nigeria where smallholder farming brings lasting prosperity, and we are committed to making that vision a reality,” Gabriel affirmed.
